Innovative Wood-Based Solutions to Mitigate Material Failures in Traditional Wooden Fishing Boats: A Review
The construction, design, and technology of traditional fishing boats are integral to Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Despite advancements in materials and methods, wood remains the primary material for boat construction due to its availability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of repair. This review examines innovative wood-based composite technologies aimed at addressing material failure issues in wooden ship structures. Superhydrophobic treatments utilizing methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) significantly enhance wood’s corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Transparent flame-retardant coatings have effectively delayed wood charring without compromising the material’s aesthetic qualities. Densified Wood Dowels Filled with Aluminum Tubes (DWFAT) offer a viable alternative to steel dowels, providing superior performance in terms of stiffness, load-bearing capacity, and corrosion resistance. Collectively, these advancements underscore the necessity for ongoing innovation in wood material technology to mitigate material failures, enhance the durability and performance of traditional wooden ships, and ensure compliance with modern standards.
