Particular emphasis is placed on identifying safety margins and their potential contribution to extending service life. The paper includes an analysis of relevant design codes and the variability of material properties, with a focus on the coefficient of variation (COV) of concrete. In addition, the application of reliability-based safety concepts using partial safety factors is examined.
