Associations between green open spaces and social interaction in neighbourhoods: a systematic literature review
Green Open Space (GOS) plays an important role in enhancing urban sustainability and liveability. GOS has been proven to provide various benefits for social sustainability in neighbourhoods. However, there are significant gaps in understanding the relationships between GOSs and social interaction in neighbourhoods. This study aims to exploring of the relationships between GOSs and social interaction in neighbourhoods through a systematic review. Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched in July 2024. In total, 42 articles were selected for a qualitative synthesis of the outcomes on the topic. This systematic review identified four themes and twelve specific sub-themes on the topic: 1) frequency of GOS use (frequency of GOS visits; duration of GOS use), 2) quantity and spatial patterns of GOSs (amount of GOSs; size of GOSs; GOSs’ spatial patterns), 3) quality of GOS spaces (quality of nature, recreation, sport spaces, and amenities), and 4) pedestrian environment of GOSs (walking accessibility to GOSs; quality of walking paths; and pedestrian connectivity). The paper presents a framework for summarizing the key findings of the major GOS-related factors influencing social interaction. It provides insights for policymakers, developers, and urban planners in city and neighbourhood planning.
