This edition of Poet's Pen focuses on a rare but catastrophic complication associated with methamphetamine, the use of which is progressively rising in certain parts of the country. The featured poem, "The Pulse of a Silent Killer," shows the utility of poetry to sound the alarm amidst an emergency, alerting the medical community that all may not be as it seems. According to its author, the piece "reflects the rising crisis of methamphetamine-induced cardiomyopathy among young adults in Texas. This devastating condition, often overlooked, strikes with increasing frequency, leaving young lives cut short and communities shattered. The poem captures the silent but powerful toll of the epidemic and offers both a mournful reflection on lives lost and a call to action for those in the medical field to rise to the challenge of prevention and care. The painful panoply of substance abuse is one that captures many, and methamphetamine is but one of several illicit drugs that have become attractive to use. It is highly addictive, being abused largely on account of the stimulant effects that seem to be uniquely attractive to younger users. Though the euphoric effects of methamphetamine are short-lived, its long-term implications-including the cardiomyopathy associated with its use-can be challenging to diagnose, difficult to treat, and quickly result in disastrously permanent consequences.
