Comparison of Two Different Intraocular Lenses Used in the Modified Yamane Technique.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of two different intraocular lenses(IOLs) used in the modified Yamane technique.

Setting: Yozgat City Hospital,Türkiye.

Design: Retrospective study.

Method: This study included 50 patients, divided into two groups:Group A(n=25) that received the Alcon MA60AC lens and Group S(n=25) that received the Sensar AR40e lens.Surgical indications included aphakia and subluxation of single-piece IOLs.The groups were compared based on demographic data, intraoperative and postoperative complications, visual acuity, and refractive outcomes. All participants were assessed preoperatively and at the sixth postoperative month.

Results: No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, gender, axial length,or IOL power(p>0.05).Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in uncorrected and corrected visual acuity(p<0.05).At six months postoperatively, the spherical refractive value was +0.75±0.48D in Group A and -0.56±0.49D in Group S (p=0.01).The deviation from the target refraction was 1.71±1.35D in Group A and 0.65±1.54D in Group S (p<0.001).No significant difference was found in cylindrical refraction between the groups(Group A:-1.56±0.95 D,Group S:-1.48±1.04 D,p>0.05). Intraoperative damage to the haptic occurred in one case in each group. In the postoperative period, no IOL-specific complications were observed;however, cystoid macular edema and retinal detachment were noted in one case each in Group A,and cystoid macular edema and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy were observed in one case each in Group S.

Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study comparing the outcomes of two different IOLs in the modified Yamane technique, based on real-life data. The results revealed that this technique could be performed effectively and safely with polymethylmethacrylate haptic IOLs.Furthermore,to achieve emmetropia, each IOL may require specific modifications for the target refraction.
