Integrins are a class of membrane protein that exists widely on the cell surface. Their primary function is to mediate connections between the extracellular matrix and cytoskeleton. Integrin plays vital roles in numerous physiological and pathological processes, including the occurrence and development of diseases such as tumors and inflammation. Within the field of stomatology, integrins are also actively studied molecules. Research indicates that specific integrins play essential roles in oral diseases including oral mucositis, periodontitis, and oral cancer.
Methods
This review involves a comprehensive search of the Web of Science and PubMed.
Results
This review synthesizes current research on integrins in oral squamous cell carcinoma, oral submucous fibrosis, oral pemphigoid, oral mucositis, periodontal disease, and peri-implantitis.
Conclusions
This review provides a systematic summary of the roles of integrins in oral biology and disease pathogenesis, helping to reduce barriers in integrin research and offering some theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases.
The aim of the Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine is to publish manuscripts of high scientific quality representing original clinical, diagnostic or experimental work in oral pathology and oral medicine. Papers advancing the science or practice of these disciplines will be welcomed, especially those which bring new knowledge and observations from the application of techniques within the spheres of light and electron microscopy, tissue and organ culture, immunology, histochemistry and immunocytochemistry, microbiology, genetics and biochemistry.
