Local excision and secondary intention healing combined with photodynamic therapy for periocular basal cell carcinoma
Objective
To evaluate the efficacy of combining Local excision and secondary intention healing with photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating periocular basal cell carcinoma (pBCC).
Methods
Clinical data from 5 pBCC patients treated between 2022 and 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. After local tumor excision, immediate intraoperative PDT was administered, followed by wound management via secondary intention healing and weekly PDT sessions.
Results
Complete lesion clearance was achieved in all 5 cases of pBCC, with favorable cosmetic outcomes. During a follow-up period of 18–39 months (mean 25 months), no recurrence was observed.
Conclusion
The combined protocol minimizes the surgical defect size, simplifies post-procedural reconstruction, and enhances tumor clearance rates. It is particularly suitable for patients with BCC located in anatomically critical regions such as the periocular area, where traditional surgical excision is not amenable.
