Exploring the impact of gross gaming revenue on unemployment and labor force participation rates in Macao
This study examines how gross gaming revenue (GGR) affects unemployment and labor force participation rates in Macao. We apply the error correction model (ECM) to monthly data from January 2003 to December 2023. Our results indicate that increases in GGR are associated with decreases in both unemployment and labor force participation rates in the short-term. This phenomenon suggests that people are leaving the labor force temporarily when GGR increases. Despite the seemingly positive unemployment rate decline, the lower labor force participation rate may be considered a sign of a weak job market, implying that the Government of Macao needs to diversify revenue channels rather than rely solely on the gaming sector.
