Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare malignant neoplasm of mesenchymal origin first described by Enzinger in 1970. This entity is known for its clinical aggressive behavior and overall poor prognosis. ES often presents in the extremities of adolescents and young adults and is exceedingly rare in the head and neck region, especially the oral cavity. We present a case of epithelioid sarcoma with metastasis to the oral cavity (maxillary gingiva and mandible). The tumor is composed of predominantly epithelioid cells admixed with scattered spindle cells. Both populations of cells display hyperchromasia and pleomorphism. The tumor cells are positive for MCK, CK8, EMA, vimentin, CD34, and negative for S100, CD45, and CD31.
期刊介绍:
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology is required reading for anyone in the fields of oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, oral radiology or advanced general practice dentistry. It is the only major dental journal that provides a practical and complete overview of the medical and surgical techniques of dental practice in four areas. Topics covered include such current issues as dental implants, treatment of HIV-infected patients, and evaluation and treatment of TMJ disorders. The official publication for nine societies, the Journal is recommended for initial purchase in the Brandon Hill study, Selected List of Books and Journals for the Small Medical Library.
