WH-Überseequartier in Hamburg – structures of the 14 buildings

The new center of the HafenCity district, located directly by the river Elbe: WH-Überseequartier in Hamburg, was opened in April 2025. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield is the company behind the project as investor, developer and operator of the new district, which has a total gross floor area of 419.000 square meters and consists of 14 buildings based on designs from numerous renowned architectural firms. This paper describes the buildings as well as the structural challenges of the various load-bearing structures of the buildings and basements in relation to the different usage requirements, showcased from the perspective of planning and construction execution. The already published first part about the WH-Überseequartier describes the challenges of planning and implementing the various civil engineering structures required in the district, from the construction pits in combination with the subway station located in the middle of the con-struction site to the necessary partial replacement of the quay construction walls at Chicagokai and the foundations of the buildings and landscape architecture.
