Addressing Value Tensions in the Design of Technologies to Support Older Persons (AgeTech) Using Responsible Research and Innovation and Value Sensitive Design.
The ageing of the global population has prompted the development of many technologies to support older persons (AgeTech). Those developing AgeTech need to not only consider different end users, including older persons and their caregivers, but also be cognizant of the fact that these groups have a variety of, often conflicting, values. The frameworks of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) both emphasize the integration of end users' values into the process of designing new technologies. Drawing from recent empirical and theoretical AgeTech literature, this article presents an argument for applying these frameworks to the field of AgeTech to successfully identify values and manage tensions among them. It aims to inform a more successful AgeTech innovation process in which new technologies represent and prioritize what their intended end users value.
期刊介绍:
Science and Engineering Ethics is an international multidisciplinary journal dedicated to exploring ethical issues associated with science and engineering, covering professional education, research and practice as well as the effects of technological innovations and research findings on society.
While the focus of this journal is on science and engineering, contributions from a broad range of disciplines, including social sciences and humanities, are welcomed. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, ethics of new and emerging technologies, research ethics, computer ethics, energy ethics, animals and human subjects ethics, ethics education in science and engineering, ethics in design, biomedical ethics, values in technology and innovation.
We welcome contributions that deal with these issues from an international perspective, particularly from countries that are underrepresented in these discussions.
