Photochemical Generation of Allenes from Phenanthrene-Based Methylenecyclobutanes

Photofragmentation of substituted 1-methylene-1,2,2a,10b-tetrahydrocyclobuta[l]phenanthrenes, under ambient conditions in solution, produces the corresponding allenes with the concomitant formation of phenanthrene.
