Simultaneous Enchondroma and Osteochondroma in the Hand: A Case Report.
Abstract: The simultaneous occurrence of enchondroma and osteochondroma in the hand is exceptionally rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. We report a unique presentation in a 12-year-old female patient with both lesions in the second metacarpal. Enchondromas, the most common primary bone tumors of the hand, are often asymptomatic but may cause deformities or pathologic fractures. Osteochondromas, conversely, are rare in the hand, may cause functional impairment or cosmetic concerns. Radiological evaluation, including X-ray, CT, and MRI, was cru-cial for diagnosis, revealing distinct features of both tumors. Surgical excision was undertaken due to mechanical symptoms and aesthetic considerations. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnoses of enchondroma and osteochondroma. Postoperative follow-up at one year showed no recurrence. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, comprehensive radiologic and histopathologic assessment, and timely surgical intervention to prevent functional and cosmetic complications. It also underscores the necessity of monitoring cartilaginous lesions for potential malignant transformation, particularly in rare dual presentations.
