Study of Dermatoglyphic Patterns (Ridge Count and Angle) in Bronchial Asthma: A Case Control Study.

Introduction: Dermatoglyphic patterns can be used as a diagnostic method for identification of a variety of diseases like bronchial asthma.

Objective: To evaluate dermatoglyphic patterns (ridge count and angle) as a noninsidious anatomical marker of bronchial asthma.

Materials and methods: The present research was done on 102 clinically diagnosed bronchial asthma patients reported to OPD of the department of T.B. and Chest. 102 normal healthy individuals who did not have the history of bronchial asthma were taken as controls. Dermatoglyphic recording was done by the ink method of CUMMINS and MIDLO.

Results: In our study, we found a significantly higher a-b ridge count in left and right hands of cases, compared to left and right hands of controls. The c-d ridge count was also found to be significantly higher in the left and right hands of cases, compared to left and right hands of controls.

Conclusion: The dermatoglyphic patterns have the statistically significant correlation with the asthma patients. Hence, these patterns can be used as the noninvasive anatomical marker for the patients of bronchial asthma.
