Rapid charging and discharging strategies for latent heat storage
Latent heat storage (LHS) technology has emerged as a critical enabler for achieving carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability. A fundamental challenge limiting its widespread adoption stems from the inherently low thermal conductivity of most phase change materials (PCMs), which severely restricts the heat charging/discharging rates of LHS systems. This review comprehensively examines rapid heat charging and discharging technologies, introducing an innovative classification of PCMs into stabilized and dynamic types based on their phase-change mode and motion state. It systematically analyzes performance enhancement strategies, including traditional, bionic, combined, and externally driven methods for stabilized PCMs, as well as advanced external force-driven enhancement techniques and underlying heat transfer mechanisms for dynamic PCMs. Beyond summarizing current technological developments, this review highlights the current challenges and future prospects for LHS technologies, providing actionable insights for engineering applications. Ultimately, this review intends to stimulate extensive research interests in heat storage and utilization and to offer constructive references for exploring advanced rapid charging and discharging technologies to facilitate major breakthroughs in both basic research and commercial applications.

期刊介绍: The mission of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews is to disseminate the most compelling and pertinent critical insights in renewable and sustainable energy, fostering collaboration among the research community, private sector, and policy and decision makers. The journal aims to exchange challenges, solutions, innovative concepts, and technologies, contributing to sustainable development, the transition to a low-carbon future, and the attainment of emissions targets outlined by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews publishes a diverse range of content, including review papers, original research, case studies, and analyses of new technologies, all featuring a substantial review component such as critique, comparison, or analysis. Introducing a distinctive paper type, Expert Insights, the journal presents commissioned mini-reviews authored by field leaders, addressing topics of significant interest. Case studies undergo consideration only if they showcase the work's applicability to other regions or contribute valuable insights to the broader field of renewable and sustainable energy. Notably, a bibliographic or literature review lacking critical analysis is deemed unsuitable for publication.
