A network approach to understanding the relationship between childhood maltreatment, suicidal ideation and psychological symptoms among Chinese adolescents
Background
Childhood maltreatment poses a significant threat to adolescents' mental health, leading to suicidal ideation and various psychological symptoms. This study aims to explore the complex relationships between different types of childhood maltreatment, suicidal ideation and psychological symptoms in Chinese adolescents using network analysis, with a focus on the effects of different maltreatment subtypes.
Methods
This study collected data through a convenience samplings in China from June to September 2020, and included 20,055 adolescents in middle and high school who had experienced maltreatment. Network analysis was used to reveal relationships between childhood maltreatment, suicide probability (including suicidal ideation), and psychological symptoms. The analysis was replicated in another sample collected in 2021 to assess the stability of the network over time.
Results
Network analysis revealed strong correlations between the five subtypes of childhood maltreatment, suicide probability, and psychological symptoms among adolescents. Anxiety, depression, and paranoia emerged as nodes with the highest network centrality, while negative self-evaluation, emotional neglect, and emotional abuse had the highest bridge centrality. Emotional abuse exhibited the strongest association with suicidal ideation, as well as a strong connection with hopelessness. Emotional neglect had the second strongest association with suicidal ideation, and was closely related to negative self-evaluation. The network demonstrated good stability over time.
Conclusions
The findings highlight the distinct importance of emotional abuse and emotional neglect in adolescent suicidal ideation, suggesting the two subtypes should be prioritized in suicide prevention efforts. The central roles of anxiety, depression, and paranoia indicate that these symptoms may be key targets for adolescent mental health interventions.
