Neuro-nutraceutical potential of selenium-enriched spirulina platensis in alleviating streptozotocin-induced cognitive impairment: Modulation of oxidative stress and acetylcholine activity in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease
This study aimed to investigate the effects of a neuro-nutraceutical formulation comprising selenium-enriched Spirulina platensis (Se-SP) on cognitive and behavioral impairments, cholinergic deficits, selenium deficiency, and oxidative stress induced by intracerebroventricular injection of streptozotocin (ICV-STZ). The antioxidant capacity of Se-SP was confirmed through DPPH assay, and its selenium content was quantified using ICP-MS analysis. Fifty male rats were randomly assigned to five groups. Oral administration of the neuro-nutraceutical formulation (50 mg/kg) began after ICV-STZ injection and continued for 21 days. Selenium levels, cholinergic function, oxidative stress markers, and cognitive performance were evaluated.
The results demonstrated that Se-SP treatment prevented acetylcholine depletion by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase activity and significantly improved behavioral test performance. Furthermore, Se-SP enhanced the activity of the selenoenzyme glutathione peroxidase, protecting against brain selenium depletion. It also effectively reduced ICV-STZ-induced lipid peroxidation by boosting antioxidant defenses. These findings suggest that Se-SP, as an organic antioxidant supplement, holds promise for alleviating oxidative stress and cholinergic dysfunction, thereby mitigating cognitive impairment
期刊介绍:
The South African Journal of Botany publishes original papers that deal with the classification, biodiversity, morphology, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, biotechnology, ethnobotany and other botanically related aspects of species that are of importance to southern Africa. Manuscripts dealing with significant new findings on other species of the world and general botanical principles will also be considered and are encouraged.
