Inclusive dining: Insights from families of children with autism spectrum disorder
This study aims to explore the obstacles faced by families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) when dining out and to provide suggestions for service strategies that restaurants can implement to serve them better. We conducted in-depth interviews with 12 parents of children with ASD to identify challenges when dining out and negotiation strategies for addressing these challenges. Multiple constraints and overcoming strategies when dining out were found among the interviewees. The findings indicate that the challenges are conceptually well explained according to the leisure constraint theory. The findings suggest that establishing inclusive environments promoting acceptance and understanding can foster a welcoming and enjoyable dining experience for these families.
