Native Trichoderma formulations to biocontrol eggs and adults of Xylotrechus arvicola
Xylotrechus arvicola (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is an important pest in vineyards (Vitis vinifera) in the main wine-producing regions of Spain. The control of this pest is difficult due to the biology of this pest. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae, which have a very long larval development, burrow into the trunks and branches of the vines, causing severe damage. Biological control agents (BCAs), as the fungi Trichoderma spp. have been described as an effective tool in controlling and preventing the spread of a variety of plant pests and diseases. Consequently, the aim of the present study was to assess the capacity native Trichodema strains isolated from vineyards as BCAs of X. arvicola. Trichoderma strains were tested alone and in formulation with Tween 20 and Tween 80 against X. arvicola eggs and adults. In conclusion, native Trichoderma strains and their formulations are effective to control X. arvicola. although with different effect on eggs and adults. T. carraovejensis (T154 + Tween 80) is the best formulation to control X. arvicola eggs. T. carraovejensis (T154) and T. harzianum (T214) and their formulations with Tween 80 control adults in field conditions, reducing the life of insects by more than 50 %. The new species, T. carraovejensis, recently discovered by our group in ecologically managed vineyards, deserves special attention. T. carraovejensis (T154 + Tween 80) formulation can be considered as highly effective BCAs on X. arvicola eggs and adults in vineyards.
期刊介绍:
Biological control is an environmentally sound and effective means of reducing or mitigating pests and pest effects through the use of natural enemies. The aim of Biological Control is to promote this science and technology through publication of original research articles and reviews of research and theory. The journal devotes a section to reports on biotechnologies dealing with the elucidation and use of genes or gene products for the enhancement of biological control agents.
The journal encompasses biological control of viral, microbial, nematode, insect, mite, weed, and vertebrate pests in agriculture, aquatic, forest, natural resource, stored product, and urban environments. Biological control of arthropod pests of human and domestic animals is also included. Ecological, molecular, and biotechnological approaches to the understanding of biological control are welcome.
