Type 2 diabetes affects 1-2 million new individuals annually. Despite a wide range of treatment options for type 2 diabetes, many people still fail to achieve therapeutic goals. Treating type 2 diabetes more proactively with a pathophysiologic approach can ensure higher rates of success and reduce complications. This article summarizes the progressive understanding of the pathophysiology of diabetes, draws a connection between illness and beta-cell health, and introduces the pathophysiologic approach to type 2 diabetes and its focus on beta-cell preservation.
