Rare case of salmonellosis-related coronary aneurysm, complicated with myocardial infarction and constrictive pericarditis: a case report.
Background: Salmonellosis is a common bacterial disease that usually runs a benign course and most patients recover without specific treatment. However, some develop extra-intestinal complications which can have long-term cardiac implications.
Case summary: A 46-year-old man with known ischaemic heart disease presented with fever. The case which was thought to be a viral infection soon developed myocardial infarction, pericardial effusion, and subsequent constrictive pericarditis as a result of salmonellosis. He recovered after targeted antibiotics, repeated pericardial drainage, and surgical interventions.
Discussion: This rare case of salmonellosis with infected coronary artery aneurysm and pericarditis emphasizes the importance of history taking, especially food intake in patients with unexplained fever. High index of suspicion is needed and multi-modality serial imaging should be used for early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
