Neutron dripline search for fluorine, neon and sodium and the discovery of 39Na at RIKEN RIBF
Experiments to search for new fluorine, neon and sodium isotopes near the neutron dripline were conducted at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. Isotopes were produced by projectile fragmentation of an intense 48Ca beam at 345 MeV/nucleon, and separated and identified in flight using the large-acceptance two-stage separator BigRIPS. We determined the neutron dripline at fluorine and neon to be 31F and 34Ne, respectively and discovered an extremely neutron-rich isotope 39Na with neutron number N = 28. The results provide new keys to understanding nuclear binding and underlying nuclear structure in this extremely neutron-rich region. An overview of the experiments and a discussion of the underlying nuclear structure are presented.
