Resource curse or resource blessing? A moderated mediation model of the relationship between natural resource dependence and proenvironmental attitudes and behaviors
From an individual-based approach, this research investigates the relationship of household natural resource dependence with individuals’ proenvironmental attitudes and behaviors. We also examine the mediating role of gratitude to nature and the moderating role of anthropomorphism of nature in the examined relationship. We collected data from five high schools in Tibet (n = 8766), a place with high natural resource dependence in China. The results showed that household natural resource dependence, whether using subjective or objective indicators, predicted stronger gratitude to nature, which, in turn, was associated with stronger proenvironmental attitudes and more proenvironmental behaviors. Furthermore, we observed a significant moderating effect of anthropomorphism of nature on the mediating effect of gratitude to nature. Among those with lower anthropomorphism of nature, natural resource dependence was related to stronger gratitude to nature, and gratitude to nature was related to more proenvironmental behaviors. The findings highlight the positive relationship between natural resource dependence and proenvironmental tendencies.
