Psychological Consequences in Victims of Ecclesiastical Sexual Abuse by Catholic Church Representatives: A Qualitative Study in Chile
This study aims to explore and describe the consequences in adults who were victims of child sexual abuse perpetrated by representatives of the Catholic Church in Chile. A qualitative methodology was used to analyse interviews with victims of childhood sexual abuse in Catholic institutional settings in different cities of the country. The results revealed that harm distributed in categories, including emotional, cognitive, interpersonal, self-regulation of behaviour and spiritual harm. This study contributes to understanding the phenomenon through the testimony of victims. In conclusion, this article offers insight into the profound and long-lasting impact of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church context and its implications for adult life. The practical implications of this study may provide information to public policy and a potential commission for reparation and justice for victims of institutional child abuse in Chile.
