Introduction

Approximately 14% of older adults experience mental disorders, contributing significantly to the global burden of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) at 10.6%. Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent conditions, disproportionately affecting low-income countries, where 80% of cases are reported. In Latin America, mental disorders are a primary cause of disability, underscoring the need for complementary treatment approaches such as physiotherapy.

Objective

This study evaluates the impact of physiotherapy on the mental health of retired older adults.

Materials and methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in a geriatric clinic in Querétaro, involving 213 older adults. Data were collected between February and April 2023 and analyzed with IBM SPSS v.25. The Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were employed to assess the association between physiotherapy and mental health, with a 95% confidence interval and a significance level of 0.05.

Results

Among participants, 44.1% had a mental disorder, yet only 24.2% engaged in physiotherapy. Chi-square analysis indicated a significant association between physiotherapy and better mental health outcomes (P=.001), with an odds ratio of 0.30 (95% CI: 0.146-0.615), suggesting that physiotherapy lowers the risk of developing mental health issues.

Conclusions

The findings indicate that physiotherapy may serve as a protective factor against mental disorders in older adults. Incorporating physical therapists into mental health care teams is recommended to enhance treatment outcomes through tailored physical activity interventions.
