Revisiting the neighborhood definition in view of the 15-minute neighborhood and sustainable neighborhood concepts
The neighborhood scale has gained traction in the quest to create sustainable and resilient cities. Despite this, the definition of ‘neighborhood’ often remains vague and overlooked in studies on sustainable neighborhoods. This research re-examines the definition of a neighborhood within the context of sustainable neighborhood concepts and the 15-minute neighborhood concept. Research methods include bibliometric and content analysis of pertinent literature and a case study. The study critiques the current literature's emphasis on the physical dimension of neighborhoods and underscores the importance of an integrative three-dimensional neighborhood definition that encompasses physical, social, and psychological aspects. These dimensions are essential for the comprehensive design and evaluation of neighborhood sustainability. The paper presents evidence from Hamburg to bolster its claims. Consequently, this study not only provides a common ground for the two highly debated urban sustainability concepts, namely sustainable neighborhoods and the 15-minute neighborhood but also brings to light the critical yet overlooked role of the neighborhood definition in sustainability transformations. The article advocates for the advancement of holistic and participatory approaches to develop sustainable neighborhoods that are also resilient to climate change and other challenges.
