The team nursing model was introduced by Eleanor Lambertson in the 1940s to address the lack of registered nurses during World War II. This article examines implementation of the team nursing model over 21 months at an observation/clinical decision unit in western Florida during the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlights include positive effects on patient outcomes, length of stay, and collaborative benefits to staff. On average, length of stay decreased to 59% of the geometric length over 2 years. This article reviews the genesis of team nursing, provides a detailed practice model and protocols for easy replication and implementation, presents 2 years of length of stay versus geometric length of stay data supporting this practice model, and discusses perspectives regarding effects on patient health outcomes and staff engagement.
