A review of trends and patterns in transportation journals from 2000 to 2024
This study addresses the need to understand trends, thematic shifts, and emerging areas in transportation research, given the increasing number of journals in the field. The paper reviews the evolution of 41 journals from 2000 to 2024, utilizing a large sample size, the latest study period, and the inclusion of new journals. Journals were selected through keyword searches on Elsevier’s website and the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis provides insights into publication patterns and the interdisciplinary nature of current transportation research. Over the past 25 years, the annual number of published papers has increased twentyfold, with rising co-authorship and transnational collaboration. Journals have shown a growing focus on interdisciplinary research, shifting from traditional transport topics to multimodal transport and emerging technologies. This review aims to be a valuable resource for academics and practitioners in the field of transportation research.
