Effectiveness of ReCOVery APP to Improve the Quality of Life of Long COVID Patients: A 6-Month Follow-Up Randomized Clinical Trial

Effectiveness of ReCOVery APP to Improve the Quality of Life of Long COVID Patients: A 6-Month Follow-Up Randomized Clinical Trial

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the medium-term effectiveness of telerehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life for patients with Long COVID, using a mobile application (APP) called ReCOVery APP. The secondary purpose is to identify significant factors associated with an improvement in the quality of life and other secondary outcomes in this population.

Methods: A randomized clinical trial was carried out with two parallel groups involving a total of 100 patients with Long COVID. The first one (control group, n = 48) continued with their usual treatment (TAU), established by their primary care doctor. The second one (intervention group, n = 52), in addition to continuing with their TAU, attended three sessions based on motivational methodology and used the ReCOVery APP for 6 months. The primary outcome was quality of life.

Results: After 6 months, ReCOVery APP did not significantly improve the quality of life among Long COVID patients. Poor adherence to the APP was observed among the participants who tried it. Linear regression analyses revealed a significant relationship between the decrease in the number of symptoms and the improvement in mental health–related quality.

Conclusions: While this research contributes valuable insights into the potential of telerehabilitation for Long COVID patients, the lack of significant improvement in quality of life underscores the need for future large-scale studies. Such research should focus on identifying effective strategies to enhance adherence to digital interventions, such as increased professional support and personalized care approaches. Additionally, exploring the long-term effects of telerehabilitation could provide a more comprehensive understanding of its role in managing Long COVID.

期刊介绍: IJCP is a general medical journal. IJCP gives special priority to work that has international appeal. IJCP publishes: Editorials. IJCP Editorials are commissioned. [Peer reviewed at the editor''s discretion] Perspectives. Most IJCP Perspectives are commissioned. Example. [Peer reviewed at the editor''s discretion] Study design and interpretation. Example. [Always peer reviewed] Original data from clinical investigations. In particular: Primary research papers from RCTs, observational studies, epidemiological studies; pre-specified sub-analyses; pooled analyses. [Always peer reviewed] Meta-analyses. [Always peer reviewed] Systematic reviews. From October 2009, special priority will be given to systematic reviews. [Always peer reviewed] Non-systematic/narrative reviews. From October 2009, reviews that are not systematic will be considered only if they include a discrete Methods section that must explicitly describe the authors'' approach. Special priority will, however, be given to systematic reviews. [Always peer reviewed] ''How to…'' papers. Example. [Always peer reviewed] Consensus statements. [Always peer reviewed] Short reports. [Always peer reviewed] Letters. [Peer reviewed at the editor''s discretion] International scope IJCP publishes work from investigators globally. Around 30% of IJCP articles list an author from the UK. Around 30% of IJCP articles list an author from the USA or Canada. Around 45% of IJCP articles list an author from a European country that is not the UK. Around 15% of articles published in IJCP list an author from a country in the Asia-Pacific region.
