Association Between Ménière's Disease and Thyroid Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Objectives: The relationship between thyroid disease and Ménière's disease (MD) remains controversial. This article aims to explore the association between thyroid disease and MD and provide new evidence for the prevention and treatment of MD and its complications.
Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched until July 08, 2024. Based on the eligibility criteria, the literature was screened, the data were extracted, and the study quality was evaluated. The prevalence and/or incidence of MD in thyroid disease and the prevalence and/or incidence of thyroid disease in MD were explored. The pooled proportion with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated using a random-effects model.
Results: Eighteen eligible studies were finally enrolled. A total of 14 studies mentioned the prevalence of thyroid disease in MD, with a pooled prevalence rate of 8%. Two studies reported the prevalence of MD in thyroid patients, with a pooled prevalence rate of 22%. Four studies explored the incidence of thyroid disease in MD, with a combined incidence rate of 23%. Thyroid hormone treatment not only improved hypothyroidism symptoms but also MD.
Conclusions: There is a significant association between thyroid disease and MD. Symptoms of hypothyroidism and MD can be improved after thyroid hormone treatment. The available evidence is limited, and more prospective and high-quality studies are required for validation.
Clinical Otolaryngology is a bimonthly journal devoted to clinically-oriented research papers of the highest scientific standards dealing with:
current otorhinolaryngological practice
audiology, otology, balance, rhinology, larynx, voice and paediatric ORL
head and neck oncology
head and neck plastic and reconstructive surgery
continuing medical education and ORL training
The emphasis is on high quality new work in the clinical field and on fresh, original research.
Each issue begins with an editorial expressing the personal opinions of an individual with a particular knowledge of a chosen subject. The main body of each issue is then devoted to original papers carrying important results for those working in the field. In addition, topical review articles are published discussing a particular subject in depth, including not only the opinions of the author but also any controversies surrounding the subject.
• Negative/null results
In order for research to advance, negative results, which often make a valuable contribution to the field, should be published. However, articles containing negative or null results are frequently not considered for publication or rejected by journals. We welcome papers of this kind, where appropriate and valid power calculations are included that give confidence that a negative result can be relied upon.
