Review of glass-ceramics: Solidification of toxic elements and durability
The adverse effects of hazardous solid wastes on the environment are increasing, making green disposal a global priority. Glass-ceramics, multiphase composite materials comprising microcrystalline and glass phases, are recognized for their chemical stability, excellent mechanical properties, and wear resistance. Owing to their ability to solidify toxic elements and produce high-performance products, glass-ceramics play a crucial role in the green and valuable utilization of hazardous wastes. However, with the growing application of glass-ceramics solidification technology, concerns have arisen regarding the environmental safety of glass-ceramics containing toxic elements during long-term service. This paper reviews the latest research on the solidification and durability of glass-ceramics, focusing on toxic elements solidification, glass-ceramics corrosion, and factors influencing the corrosion resistance of glass-ceramics. Suggestions for future research are provided based on this review and discussion. This paper serves as a reference for achieving the safe solidification of toxic elements in glass-ceramics.
