The role of Gd and Yb elements in strengthening Mg-Gd-Yb magnesium alloys
In this study, a series of Mg–Gd–Yb ternary alloys were prepared with different Yb/Gd content ratio in a total constant content of Gd and Yb at 10 wt.%. The role of Gd and Yb in strengthening was identified. The results showed that the alloys after the solid-solution treatment maintained primary particles of Mg5Gd and Mg2Yb phases undissolved in Mg-matrix. The total volume fraction of particles was the smallest at the Yb/Gd content ratio of 0.43. These primary particles contributed less to the strength. After aging, fine Mg5Gd in the equiaxed shape and Mg2Yb in the rectangular shape precipitated from the Mg-matrix with incoherent interface. The volume fraction of Mg5Gd precipitates decreased, and that of Mg2Yb precipitates increased with increasing Yb/Gd content ratio. The aged alloys exhibited evident aging strengthening effect. As compared, Gd played a more effective role in precipitation strengthening, but was less effective in solid-strengthening than Yb.

The Journal of Alloys and Compounds is intended to serve as an international medium for the publication of work on solid materials comprising compounds as well as alloys. Its great strength lies in the diversity of discipline which it encompasses, drawing together results from materials science, solid-state chemistry and physics.
