It enables a transformed cell to adopt mesenchymal phenotype and acquire higher potential to migrate and invade. This ultimately leads to cancer metastasis. During this process, junctional proteins undergo remarkable changes in terms of their expressional pattern, localization, and activity. De-localized junctional proteins may adopt atypical roles which might act to either suppress tumorigenesis or facilitate cancer development, depending on several factors.
