Medical and biological role of Apigenin: A comprehensive review

Medical and biological role of Apigenin: A comprehensive review

Introduction

The plant-derived bioactive compounds from the flavone structural class include APGN (apigenin), the 4, 5, and 7-trihydroxyflavone. In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), APGN has drawn much attention. This review-based study aims to unveil various perspectives of APGN in connection to its medical and biological roles with emphasis on anti-infective and anti-inflammatory activities, considering various APGN containing plant-based TCM formulations.

Methods

A thorough review of literatures was performed using various combinations of keywords, including 'Chinese medicine,' 'APGN against infection,' 'inflammation,' and TCM. A few of the other keywords that were used in this review included 'Qin Pi Tang,' 'Shu Gan Wan,' and 'Lóng Dǎn Xiè Gān Tāng. The scientific articles on the mentioned fields, published between the years 1994 and 2024 in different journals, were mined from NCBI-PubMed or Google Scholar databases to accomplish the current review.

Results

The literature review found that APGN possesses promising therapeutic benefits against various inflammations and bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Combinational formulations of APGN used as TCM are one of the valuable insights that were deciphered here.

Discussion

The compound APGN possesses a broad spectrum of therapeutic efficacy. APGN-rich TCM-specific formulations and their applications are elaborated. They revealed anti-infective and anti-inflammatory potential. Similarly, 'Shu Gan Wan’ (SGW) and 'Lóng Dǎn Xiè Gān Tāng’ (LDZGT) including a few others, are being discussed. The role of APGN as a neuro-protectant and immune-modulatory agent is one of the valuable insights highlighted in this review. The way to address the bioavailability limitations of APGN in the form of nano-carriers has been discussed. TCM-specific terms and their brief descriptions were given in this review for better accessibility to scholarly audiences. The anti-oxidative and anticancer properties of APGN were discussed, and various clinical trials were cited in this review. Finally, this review emphasized the existing research gaps in the field. Addressing the further need for study on APGN as a bioactive compound is essential to update the medical and biological activities of APGN.
