An assessment was completed using predetermined criteria to establish whether the subject understood what was required and could satisfactorily complete the test. Likewise, it was also determined if the Special Olympics athletes believed they understood the test.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Study findings determined that approximately 67% of the athletes in the study were able to successfully complete the test and 90% of the Special Olympics athletes reported they completely understood the test. These results do not apply to the intellectual disability population at large.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>A significant percentage of the test population appeared able to successfully undergo the Semmes-Weinstein test for lack of protective sensation (LOPS).
