Despite some morphological resemblance with <i>Hysteriaceae</i>, including low ascomata with a thick carbonized peridium and mainly five-septate ascospores, multigene analysis of the five molecular markers SSU, ITS, LSU, <i>TEF1-α</i> and <i>RPB2</i> revealed an affinity to <i>Mytilinidiaceae</i>. The new species formed a strongly supported sister clade to the remaining strains of <i>Mytilinidiaceae</i>.
