Synthesis of Cu-Supported ZSM-5/UiO-66 Composite Catalysts for Efficient Degradation of Methylene Blue

Cu-supported composite catalysts consisting of metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66) and ZSM-5 zeolite (Cu/ZSM-5/UiO-66, Cu–ZSM-5/UiO-66, and (Cu/ZSM-5)/UiO-66, respectively) were synthesized for the efficient catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of methylene blue (MB) wastewater. The Cu-active components were introduced by using incipient wetness impregnation method and one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The composite catalysts were characterized by SEM, EDS mapping, XRD, and FT-IR. The catalytic activity can be affected by the ZSM-5 loading ratio and the Cu introduction method. Results indicated that the Cu/ZSM-5/UiO-66 composite catalysts exhibited the best catalytic activity for the CWPO degradation of MB wastewater (XMB = 100%, XH2O2 = 89%) compared with Cu–ZSM-5/UiO-66 catalysts (XMB = 89%, XH2O2 = 25%) and (Cu/ZSM-5)/UiO-66 (XMB = 90%, XH2O2 = 29%) which confirmed the controllable activity of the catalysts. No Cu leaching concentration was detected in the treated wastewater over the Cu–ZSM-5/UiO-66 and (Cu/ZSM-5)/UiO-66 catalysts which indicated the enhanced stability of the Cu species in the composite catalysts. The supported Cu composite catalysts showed good catalytic activity and high stability for the CWPO of MB wastewater which have potential application in dye wastewater treatment.

The Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering provides a global forum for the dissemination of research in chemical engineering. The Journal publishes significant research results obtained in the Asia-Pacific region, and simultaneously introduces recent technical progress made in other areas of the world to this region. Submitted research papers must be of potential industrial significance and specifically concerned with chemical engineering. The editors will give preference to papers having a clearly stated practical scope and applicability in the areas of chemical engineering, and to those where new theoretical concepts are supported by new experimental details. The Journal also regularly publishes featured reviews on emerging and industrially important subjects of chemical engineering as well as selected papers presented at international conferences on the subjects.
