Joint Bitrate Adaptation and Resource Allocation by Leveraging SVC Setting for Wireless Scalable Video Multicast
Multicast emerges as an efficient solution to overcome the spectrum shortage to meet the tremendous demands on wireless video streaming, which encounters the diversity of users channel conditions. While various adaption schemes have been developed by exploiting the flexibility in different layers in wireless video streaming to cover it, there still be an open issue to further improve the multicast efficiency in resource utilization and QoS provisioning. This letter presents an adaptive scalable video multicast strategy by leveraging the flexible setting of scalable video coding (SVC) to bitrate adaptation and resource allocation for improving overall video quality of multicast services in dynamic stochastic environments. The joint optimization of SVC setting, bitrate adaptation and resource allocation is formulated as mix-integer programming and solved by an adaptive genetic algorithm with light computational burden. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the presented strategy by comparing with benchmarks.

IEEE Wireless Communications Letters publishes short papers in a rapid publication cycle on advances in the state-of-the-art of wireless communications. Both theoretical contributions (including new techniques, concepts, and analyses) and practical contributions (including system experiments and prototypes, and new applications) are encouraged. This journal focuses on the physical layer and the link layer of wireless communication systems.
