Modifiers for the preparation of starch composites under mechanochemical activation: An extended set of criteria
Modification of starch with synthetic polymers under mechanochemical activation is a convenient way to regulate the operational properties of composite materials. The widespread use of this approach is limited by the lack of data on the influence of synthetic polymer nature on the properties of starch and the absence of clear criteria for modifiers selection in the form of aqueous dispersions. To eliminate existing problems, the work proposes to use five integral criteria − polarity, hydrophilicity, and flexibility of synthetic modifiers, as well as particle size and ζ-potential of their aqueous dispersions. To achieve this goal, we studied the dielectric constant, contact angles, IR spectra, and dynamic mechanical properties of four acrylic copolymers and an aliphatic polyurethane. Using the mechanochemical activation, blends and composite films based on corn starch and synthetic modifiers (80:20) were manufactured. Methods of rotational viscometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, DMA, mechanical tests, and moisture permeability allowed us to reveal the influence of the modifier integral parameters on the rheological characteristics of the molding blends and the impact of joint mechanical activation on them, as well as on the crystal structure of the composites, their storage modulus, strength, and transport characteristics.

European Polymer Journal is dedicated to publishing work on fundamental and applied polymer chemistry and macromolecular materials. The journal covers all aspects of polymer synthesis, including polymerization mechanisms and chemical functional transformations, with a focus on novel polymers and the relationships between molecular structure and polymer properties. In addition, we welcome submissions on bio-based or renewable polymers, stimuli-responsive systems and polymer bio-hybrids. European Polymer Journal also publishes research on the biomedical application of polymers, including drug delivery and regenerative medicine. The main scope is covered but not limited to the following core research areas:
Polymer synthesis and functionalization
• Novel synthetic routes for polymerization, functional modification, controlled/living polymerization and precision polymers.
Stimuli-responsive polymers
• Including shape memory and self-healing polymers.
Supramolecular polymers and self-assembly
• Molecular recognition and higher order polymer structures.
Renewable and sustainable polymers
• Bio-based, biodegradable and anti-microbial polymers and polymeric bio-nanocomposites.
Polymers at interfaces and surfaces
• Chemistry and engineering of surfaces with biological relevance, including patterning, antifouling polymers and polymers for membrane applications.
Biomedical applications and nanomedicine
• Polymers for regenerative medicine, drug delivery molecular release and gene therapy
The scope of European Polymer Journal no longer includes Polymer Physics.
