The monotypic genus Dendrocacalia (Nakai) Nakai, with the species Dendrocacalia crepidifolia (Nakai) Nakai, a large shrub or small tree from the Bonin Islands or Ogasawara of Japan, is described and illustrated. Its ecology, pollination, dioecy and conservation are discussed; a detailed description is given. The species is now apparently restricted to the Haha-jima island group, where the largest number of populations exist on Haji-jima itself. Threats to its conservation are from two invasive trees, Ficus microcarpa and Psidium littorale.
