Specifically, in the integumentary system, obesity causes an expansion of the skin's surface area and changes in collagen deposition. Molecular underpinnings of why obesity delays wound healing are still poorly understood. In addition to the primary role of dermal adipocytes in lipid storage and heat insulation, they also promote skin immunity, wound healing and hair follicle cycling.
