The substantial decline in levels of ammonia in the presence of clams as compared to its absence suggests the significant role of clams in improving the water quality. Furthermore, the metagenomic analysis of the gill tissue of P. erosa revealed ~ 50% of the microbial population to consist of nitrifiers.
