Subject core competence is not only the compass of teachers' teaching, but also the reference standard of teachers' self-development. This paper discusses the relationship between high school English core competence and English teacher development from the perspective of the connotation of high school English core competence and the importance of teachers' professional development, proposes directions for the professional development of high school English pre-service teachers, and points out that high school English teachers should cultivate and improve themselves from four aspects: language ability, thinking ability, cultural awareness and learning ability.
