Methods: We performed a review of the literature for evidence linking nontopical nitrates and flap perfusion, and included clinical studies, animal studies, and in vitro studies. Results: Evidence suggests that intravascular, sublingual, and oral nitrates exert vasodilatory properties, which may be harnessed for identification of perforators and improved flap perfusion. We also found evidence suggesting nitrates may facilitate ischemic preconditioning while reducing ischemia–reperfusion injury.
