The disruption of the gut microbiome that ensues with intestinal dysbiosis is, for example, posited by decreases in the alpha-diversity of the gut microbiome, which is characterized by significant reductions in the abundance of bacterial members from the Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes phyla. Proteobacteria have often been recognized as gut microbial signatures of disease.
