An 18-year update on controlled tooth movement to correct an iatrogenic problem
The orthodontic treatment of a 9-year-old boy, who had his maxillary central incisors previously extruded by means of uncontrolled elastic mechanics to close a diastema, has remained stable after 18 years of follow-up. The consequences of the uncontrolled movement were resolved with orthodontic intrusion, and the central incisors, which show normal mobility, continue to be monitored by a periodontist. Periodontal surgeries involving connective tissue and bone grafts have been necessary over the years, but against all odds, the patient retains his natural teeth at the age of 36 years.
