However, precise mechanisms of FGF23 protein processing are not clear. Several extracellular factors have been shown to affect FGF23 levels in kidney injuries. Contribution of these factors may be different depending on the causes and stages of kidney injury. FGF23 activities are regulated by complex mechanisms involving transcriptional and posttranslational modulations.
