While considering the developing countries like India, it is very important to focus on the primary source of employment for the majority of the labour force, i.e., the Informal or the Unorganised sector of the Indian Economy. The aim of this paper is to take an insight in the various parameters of the growth, employment and labour productivity figures that have changed since 1972. The analysis would empirically capture the progress and changes in the sector down the financial years and scrutinize how it has resulted in a change in the informal labour market. The aim is to establish the importance of the Informal Sector in India and show how the grandeur behind the growing variables are a deception and hides the crumbling core of the Indian Informal Sector: falling labour productivity over the years.
