Bakom och bortom järnridån viser variasjonsbredden i hvordan makthaverne og intelligentsiaen forholdt seg til hverandre i sovjetrepublikkene Estland, Latvia, Litauen og Ukraina. Dette  benyttes til å forklare forskjeller i utviklingen i de fire landene i de formative årene på 1990-tallet. Bakom och bortom järnridån (Behind the Iron Curtain) presents the variety of ways in which those in power and the intelligentsia related to each other in the Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine as a means of explaining differences in development in the four countries during the formative 1990s.
