D. N. Ushakov was the first… to bring the country to a zugunder!

В статье рассматривается история фразеологизма довести до цугундера от момента его возникновения в армейском жаргоне царской России до наших дней. Автор, используя данные Национального корпуса русского языка, показывает, как переосмысливалось значение опорного элемента цугундер, прослеживая цепочку изменений: ‘сотня палочных ударов’ – ‘наказание, расправа, унижение’ – ‘тюрьма или другое место отбывания наказания’ – ‘любые проблемы’ – ‘ситуация на грани срыва’. Рассматривается и варьирование фразеологизма за счет глагольного компонента, чья лексическая сочетаемость и предопределяет семантический сдвиг. The article deals with the history of phraseological unit dovesti do tsugundera ‘punish with a hundred stick blows’, from the moment of its origin in the army jargon of tsarist Russia to the present day. The author, using the data of the Russian National Corpus, shows how the meaning of the element zugunder was rethought, tracing the chain of changes: ‘a hundred stick blows’ – ‘punishment, reprisal, humiliation’ – ‘prison or another place of punishment’ – ‘any problems’ – ‘the situation is on the verge of breakdown’. The variation of phraseological unit due to its verbal component, whose lexical compatibility determines the semantic shift, is also considered.
